I am a visual artist and dancer. Previously, I worked in media arts; but I have concentrated on movement-related performance in recent years. My visual-art work and performance work influence each other, and I have tried to find ways to merge these two different artistic genres. I have mainly been interested in improvisation as a way of mediating this process of merging.
Working with the body brings me close to the materiality of things and makes me aware of its constant change, which frustrates our human desire for permanence. I contemplate the material itself to witness its process of change. This contemplation allows me to improvise my reception of the objects at the given time and in the given space. I have deep reverence for the fragility of life. I was born in South Korea, and moved to Canada in 1994. After 13 years in Canada, I moved to London in England for graduate studies and lived there for 6 years. One of my memorable experiences in London was staying with a 101 year old English lady in her old Victorian house. I saw her dying slowly. It changed my view of life. After spending 3 years in South Korea, I am now back in Canada. Yet, I keep going away. |
